Originally referred to as the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, it was dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge in an 1867 letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and formally so named by the city government in 1915.

It got its name from the borough of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge connects the borough of Manhattan to the borough of Brooklyn. Originally it was called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, but that was before Brooklyn became part of New York City.

Before the five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island) consolidated into one city, New York City consisted of just Manhattan. Now that Brooklyn is part of New York City, calling the bridge the "New York and Brooklyn Bridge" is redundant.
