Christian theology Many Christian denominations classify the Eucharist as a sacrament.[25] Some Protestants prefer to call it an ordinance, viewing it not as a specific channel of divine grace but as an expression of faith and of obedience to Christ. Many Christians, even those who deny that there is any real change in the bread or wafer and wine or juice used, recognize a special presence of Christ in this rite, though they differ about exactly how, where, and when Christ is present. The Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry document of the World Council of Churches, attempting to present the common understanding of the Eucharist on the part of the generality of Christians, describes it as "essentially the sacrament of the gift which God makes to us in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit", "Thanksgiving to the Father", "Anamnesis or Memorial of Christ", "the sacrament of the unique sacrifice of Christ, who ever lives to make intercession for us", "the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ, the sacrament of his real presence", "Invocation of the Spirit", "Communion of the Faithful", and "Meal of the Kingdom". see links; * Wikipedia; Eucharist * Wikipedia: Transubstantation ANOTHER ANSWER: It is important, because it is a command of God to observe the Lord's supper in remembrance of Him. Originally, the ceremony was a Jewish feast called the Passover, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It was a time of celebration and remembrance of what God did for the Hebrews when He brought them out of bondage to Egypt during the time of the Exodus. (Exodus 11 and 12) After Jesus came, He told His disciples to continue to celebrate the feast, but to do so in remembrance of HIM - His death, burial and resurrection. (Matthew 26:26-28, and 1 Corinthians 11:23-26) The unleavened bread is to SYMBOLIZE (not become, which is a pagan tradition) Christ's body, broken for you, and the wine, or Grape Juice, is to SYMBOLIZE Christ's blood, which was shed for you. In Gentile (non-Jew) churches today, this "ceremony" is called by several names: Communion, the Lord's Supper, and the Lord's Table.

The Eucharist is very important to all Christians. This is for many reasons.

First of all, during the Last Supper, Jesus served bread and wine to his disciples. When he did this, he told them "This is my body broken for you, and this is my blood shed for you". And as the Disciples consumed the bread and wine, the sacred foods turned to Jesus' body and blood - just as he had said.

Today in services, all Christians are served bread and wine to help them remember Jesus as well as experience what the Disciples did. Some of the bread is dipped in wine. Also, Christians believe that after they have consumed the sacred foods, they turn to Jesus' raw flesh and red blood. This apparently happens after a Priest has blessed it and it is in the stomach. Despite just eating bread and wine during services, they also remember about his life and what he did for them.

Finally, Eucharist is very important to Christians because they think that this particular festival is the closest they can be to Jesus himself. This is because of the bread and wine being his body and blood and so they think that Jesus is close to them. Some groups do not describe how this is physically possible for Jesus to be with them or the foods being changed, but it is mostly accepted.

Communion or Holy Communion according to some dictionaries is "A Christian sacrament commemorating the Last Supper by consecrating bread and wine" But to this writer it is more than that. It is a time when we partake of the bread and wine or water in remembrance of the blood and body of Christ. It is a sacred time when Christians should renew their covenants which that have made with Christ. It should be the highlight of the Sabbath day.

An answer from scripture:

John 6:53, 54 - Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Matthew 26:26-28 - And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

All Catholics believe that holy communion (or the holy Eucharist as it is sometimes called) is the true flesh of Jesus Christ. They don't consider it to be simply 'bread' after it has been blessed or 'consecrated' by the priest but the actual body/skin of Christ. They believe in transubstantiation i.e. that in the mass the bread and wine IS the body and blood of Christ. They don't think it's a symbol in the way that the protestant faith do.

The Eucharist or communion is a reminder of the death of Jesus as a sacrifice for sin. The symbols represent His body (bread) and His blood (wine).

Some religions make communion out to be more but The Bible says the bread and wine are to be taken to remember Christ's death.

1Co 11:24, 25 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Because they are Christians! Christians believe the Eucharist is so important because is the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ. It is God masquerading as a piece of bread for you. Read the entire sixth chapter of St. John's Gospel, paying particular attention to the second half. Our Blessed Lord did everything that He could possibly manage, including letting all His disciples leave Him, over this issue.
