If you get a call from someone claiming they are affiliated with "Microsoft or Windows Tech Support", be aware, they are trying to scam you. First of all, Microsoft would never, ever call you like that under any circumstances.

In most cases the fraudster, will call up, in a foreign accent, insisting that your computer has an infection or virus.

You will be directed to your computer to view the Event Viewer section which shows logs, errors and problems on your computer. There will always problems or warnings on everyone's computer, this is normal. By showing you all these problems on your computer, it might convince you that there is a real problem.

The fraudster will then tell you that in order to fix the problem; you must download a program so that they can help you. If you do this the bad guys will take control of your computer and you will be at their mercy.

After taking control of your computer the fake technicians will put viruses / malware on your computer and/or make changes to your computer to really make a mess for you.

Of course for a fee, the fraudsters will fix this for you. You will then be asked for your credit card number. Do not give out personal information to these scammers; Microsoft would never call unless you contacted them first.

If you're still uncertain about the authenticity of any phone call, ask them for a name and phone number. Do your own checks and call them back if you think the person is legitimate.

It is important to never give out your credit card number, personal information or download anything that these people might ask you to.

That's why you should hang up when fraudster when they call. If it's already too late and you've given out personal information to a fraudster, contact your police and your credit card company and advise them of the fraud.
