The US Navy is by far the world's largest both in terms of personnel (over 350,000) and battle fleet tonnage (which is greater than that of the next 13 largest navies combined). It operates 11 aircraft carriers while no other country operates more than two. It also operates one of the largest and most capable air forces in the world.

Yes, the Navy is considered the most powerful tool in the U.S. arsenal; the Navy can be anywhere in the world in 72 hours fully assembled, fully armed, and fully manned (including the Marine Corps). The U.S. Navy is also the most powerful in the world; it has the best technology, and is the biggest with over 400,000 sailors on active duty.

The navy is critical to protecting the commerce of a country. It protects the ships and waterways to allow goods to be brought to the country. They serve as a defense to prevent anyone from being able to attack. It also allows the projection of power, floating forts that can go anywhere in the world by water.
