Baptists get their name from their belief that it is an important thing to be baptized. They believe that being baptized DOES NOT make you a Christian, but displays your beliefs as a Christian to other members in the church.

The term baptist comes from the practice of re-baptism also known as anabaptist. It is common in many religions to baptize infants to dedicate the family and child to God but baptists baptize those who have reached the age of accountability and can be confirmed in the faith.

Here's the problem. John the Baptist's baptism was not the baptism that Jesus and his disciples conferred. They baptized with water and 'in The Spirit'; John the Baptist did not. The early Baptists (Felix Manzer & Conrad Grebel) did not baptize with full immersion. This was a much later aberation. John did not baptize in the name of "The Father, The Son & The Holy Spirit" ... Jesus' disciples did.

Answer:The original church that Jesus started was a Baptist church. The first one to perform the ordinance of baptism was John the "Baptist." Jesus was baptized by John the "Baptist" as well. So, that is why the "Baptist" church is called "Baptist."

Matthew 3:1 (KJV) In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

Matthew 3:2 (KJV) And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Matthew 3:3 (KJV) For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Matthew 3:4 (KJV) And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Matthew 3:5 (KJV) Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

Matthew 3:6 (KJV) And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

.

Matthew 3:13 (KJV) Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

Matthew 3:14 (KJV) But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

Matthew 3:15 (KJV) And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

Matthew 3:16 (KJV) And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

Matthew 3:17 (KJV) And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.3

Curiously, the previous answers don't actually answer the question posed. The answers given were to questions such as "What is the basis for the veracity of the baptism done by Baptists?" or "What are some theories on the history or roots of the Baptist faith?" or even "What are some historical ways Baptists baptized?"

The term "Baptist" came to be the same way that the "Anabaptists" got their name (although the terms appeared to have come independently to the two groups). The Baptists were "rebaptizers". They believe in "believers baptism." That means that if a person was "baptized" or "christened" as a baby and later joined a Baptist church, that person would be required to make a statement of personal faith (demonstrate belief or conversion) and then be baptized (or rebaptized if one prefers).

This practice of baptizing people who other Christian groups felt were already baptized, caused the term "Baptist" to become associated with the the group.
