Each nail provides a support force to hold up the weight against due to graity. If each nail does not have enough force applied to it for them to pierce the skin, then you can safely lie on the nailbed. If you were to only sit or do a handstand on the nailbed, then enough of you body's total force is applied to each nail for the support force to be strong enough to pierce skin.
i think its a bed of nails
No one is recorded in the Bible as sleeping on a bed of nails.
A person can lie down on a bed of nails as the bed is large and the force is distributed evenly on the bed. Thus, making a much smaller pressure.
that would be a bed of nails
I would say that lying on a bed of nails would be less painful, as your weight would be more evenly distributed over a larger surface area.

because they are strong! You don't have to be strong to lie on a bed of nails. The trick is a combination of pain control and physics. The pain control comes from the ability to ignore mild pain and the physics comes from the distance that the nails are spaced which evenly distributes the pressure of the weight put on them over a wide area which prevents the skin from being punctured. a bed of nails has lots of points that are close together -- there's a lot of surface area for the body to cover. Hundreds of nails support the weight of your body instead of just one. The resulting force is distributed over all of the nails, so you shouldn't be injured.
They are too closely spaced.

Don't use false nails in a sun bed. just dip your fingers in acid (not acetic acid, the kind you use to remove nails and remove them befor you sit in the sun bed.)

The gist of this famous variety-show trick is that when the entire surface of the body is distributed evenly over closely-spaced nails, no puncture occurs, whereas it would occur easily if the whole weight of the body came down on one nail.
