Now blue whales are not hunted. They are an endangered species.

The used to be hunted for Whale Oil.

Blue whale hunting was banned in 1966 by the International Whaling Commission. But, by 1970 330,000 blue whales had been caught & killed in the Antarctic, 33,000 in the rest of the Southern Hemisphere, 8,200 in the North Pacific, and 7,000 in the North Atlantic. The largest original population, in the Antarctic, had been reduced to 0.15% its original count.

Blue whales were killed mostly for their oil. Whale meat and blubber are also delicacies in Japan and other countries.

No blue whales are now being killed. Hunting of blue whales was banned in 1966, and the last illegal hunting (by Russia) was in the 1970s.
they are killed because they are worth $100 000 wen they are sold to cold stores
blubber and teeth

Humans hunt blue whales for their blubber (don't laugh). People like to eat it in Scotland , and in many other countries (not North America). Some people do it because they are worth money.

Whales were hunted extensively in the past due to the fact that whale blubber was a prized ingredient in oil for oil lamps. Also in demand: ambergris oil (for perfumes), and rib bones (for corset stays).

They were hunted for some reason as other whales. For their meat and the whale oil they produce. Only reason why they are not hunted now is that whale oil is no longer used and the common sightsare found in regions where the countries like the US and UK used to hunt whales but now don't.
