The Byzantine Empire was important because it preserved knowledge from the Greeks and Romans while the rest of Europe was languishing in the Dark Ages. It originated as the Eastern Roman Empire, and they actually still felt that they were Roman almost till the Crusades. When Europe started to trade more with the East, going through the Byzantines, they picked up the knowledge that they Byzantines saved, and it was a catalyst for the Renaissance.

This was the successor to the Roman Empire and preserved Classical civilization. When Byzance was overrun by the Muslims (Ottomans, Turks) in the 15th century, many scholars fled to Western Europe, bringing their knowledge and many manuscripts with them, which led to the explosion of interest in and knowledge of the ancient world we call the Renaissance. That brought an end to the Dark Ages with massive progress in science, architecture, engineering, etc. --- Nonethless, we should not overlook that Classical knowledge had been filtering into Europe from Muslim Spain, where all three religions lived together in a "golden age". Arab scholars had learned much from the ancient Greeks; their works and ideas were translated into Latin by Jewish scholars living and working in Spainwho had close contact with them, and in that way penetrated Christian Europe. Cf. The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century and similar studies.
