The latin name of Silver is 'argentum', so 'Ag' is two letters of the latin name, which no other element can create.

In the Periodic Table, the symbols which Silver could have used, i.e. 'S pertains to the' element Sulphur and the next possibility, 'Si' element pertains to Silicon) so silver needed to take another symbol - thus Ag for Argentum.
