Actually, you can get refrigerator freezers in both configurations. From what I was told the original configuration had the freezer on bottom. This was because you had to buy big cubes of ice to keep things cold and you didn't have to lift the block as high and the melting block didn't get everything wet.

∙ 16y agoIt is less expensive to manufacture the freezer on top. Better, and more expensive, refrigerators have the freezer on the bottom or, of course, a side by side.
