The cooling element in freezers is at the top in order to keep it its coolest. This is because in a freezer or fridge the heat travels using thermal convection. In your kettle you have a the heating element at the bottom so the water particles are less dense and rise upwards beofore cooling at the top and becoming colder denser particles that then replace thehot particles at the bottom. This cycle carries on....however in a fridge or freezer you want the particles to be colder and denser so the cooling element is at the top so it allows the particles rise then to cool faster at the top. Its basically the reverse of what you have in your kettle, that allows you to boil your water!

∙ 14y agoThis is a throwback from earlier times, when ice boxes were literally boxes which held ice. The cold air would fall, and cool the food below. Cool air does not rise, which is why the ice box was not below the food.
In modern refrigerators, this is no longer an issue, and many manufacturers are now putting the freezer section at the bottom, rather than the top.

∙ 13y agoIn the old days and still in many refrigerators, the freezer was actually inside the refrigerator cabinet. It is the coldest place in the fridge where the cooling coils are located, and when cold air leaks out of it, that cold air falls down into the outer cabinet of the refrigerator. Warm air from the refrigerator portion rises up to the freezer section and gets cooled in turn. This is also why the vegetable "crispers" are located in the bottom of the fridge, I believe--the coldest air from the freezer falls there first, keeping the fruit and veggies freshest.
