The deep red colour that is present in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, guava and watermelon is caused by lycopene, a carotenoid. Other carotenoids include beta-carotene and alpha-carotene, which give carrots their orange colour. Carotenoids are fat soluble and so in the human body are found in fatty tissue and transported by lipoproteins. They act as dietary precursors to Vitamin A and aid the immune system. However lycopene has a greater property than food colouring. It is a strong antioxidant, which can help to combat degenerative diseases such as Heart disease. It was found that increased concentration of lycopene gave an increased protective effect, so the most concentrated food sources, like tomato puree and ketchup, are better protectors against these diseases. However the human body cannot produce this molecule and needs to obtain it from tomatoes in our diet. High lycopene foods like soup are the most effective against degenerative diseases

my answerbecause that's the way they were made and they started out green until they were fully grown and rippended and then they turnded red. THE RIGHT ANSWER:Its because even though the tomato is fully grown, the seeds are still young, thus green. Over time they will turn brown. The correct answerThe seeds are green because they contain chlorophill, even when inside the tomato they absorb light for photosynthesis. as they mature the outer shell hardens to protect the embrio and the chlorophill dies away leaving the seed brown. in fact seed companies use this to determine when the seeds are mature enough for harvesting as the level of chloroplasts is negetivly related to the maturity of the seed and an imature seed will not germinate.

The fruit of many plants are different colors. The minerals and other nutrients in the fruit make it take on a particular color. The leaves of the plants make food for the plant through photosynthesis. For this to happen the leaves have to contain chlorophyl which is green. And tomato's red part has different chloroplasts

If the inside of the tomato you are looking at is green, that means it is not ripe and should be given time to mature into a red color.

Is a tomato that has sprouted seeds safe to eat?

The seeds of a tomato are inside it, and usually sprout after the tomato decays and the seeds can then germinate. Seeds can actually start to sprout inside the tomato if it is kept around long enough and at room temperature. Do not eat the sprouting seeds. The flesh of the tomato is probably OK, but it must be getting a bit old and the flavor might not be what you'd hope for. I'd toss it and get a fresher one. There may be a green leaf-like top on the tomato, this is part of the plant where it was attached to the vine. A tomato with one of those is perfectly edible - just pick off the piece, it will come away easily.
