'To index' is to point out or to show something, so the finger with which you point out or showsomething is called the index finger, or just another way of calling it is the pointer finger.

Because that is the finger that engagement and wedding rings are traditionally worn on. Rings tend to get in the way if on the Pointer and the Little fingers. For most people a ring on the Ring Finger is less likely to get in the way or be affected when working with the hand.
