They breakdown and recycle complex proteins and other materials. Without it, dead things would not decay and return to the earth.

(As my friend put it - without the nitrogen cycle the earth would be clogged up with dead things)

Nitrogen is used by the plants indirectly as it converts the nitric acid into nitrates which are helpful for the plants to grow.

Nitrogen gas is fixed or changed into forms of nitrogen that plants can use.These forms are nitrates and ammonia.
