The simplest answer to this is that you'll notice the pentagram used by "satanists" is upside down and therefore needs to be seen as opposite its correct meaning. Most simply a "good" symbol corrupted into an "evil" one.

However, for a more complex and truthful meaning one really needs to look at the facts and history of the pentagram/pentacle. This symbol has been dated back all the way to3500 B.C (approx. 3460 years before Christ was born!). It was used in ancient Mesopotamia where it meant "heavenly body" which back then did not just mean god or savior but the sky as well (both day and night). After all, ancient Mesopotamians believed in a whole slew of gods/goddesses very similar to that of the Egyptians.

The use of the pentagram does not end there either. The Pythagoreans of Greece would oftentimes use the symbol as a means of recognizing one another (roughly from about 500bc to the time of Christ).

The pentagram/pentacle was also used in various parts of the world (with just slight variations) during the years before and after Christ. These variations included it being just the star, the star disconnected from the circle, the circle being a pentagon, the star being "mishapen" and even the star being upside down which appeared in some temples of Jerusalem.

The symbol was even used on coins from around 500 bc as a talisman for health and good luck.

The symbol as been found on ancient Egyptian statues as well.

The druids used it as a symbol meaning the 4 common elements and supreme being, and how they all intertwine.

After the death of Christ the symbol was adopted to take on the meaning of the 5 wounds. Afterwhich the church began its1800 year persecution of the earlier nature based religions and claimed that the use of the pentacle by witches was that of satanic worship. One of the reasons that the symbol isn't commonly used by the christians is that it may have been seen in the wrong context by the church due to the church using it to rout out witchcraft.

During the "burning times" the symbol went unused in Europe due to widespread fear of its implications. The "burning times" began around 1300 when many laws and bulls were created to allow for the trial and persecution of witches and lasted until late 1700's/early 1800's when the last of these laws and bulls were finally ammended. Although the worst of these occured between 1550 and 1650 when the frenzy and fear was at its highest. Even through all this the symbol was still seen from time to time in other regions farther east and in Judaism.

The symbol began poppinig up in America during the early 1800's after the church and government began repealing and ammending certain laws and bulls. During the ealry 1900's a popular resurgence in naturism and the occult began which paved the way for the symbol to once again pop up and start being commonly used. In 1936 Gerald Gardner was introduced and initiated into one of the surviving groups of a nature based religion and from that he created wicca.

Ultimately the symbol is just that a symbol. Depending on what you believe in the symbols meaning can change. The vast overall concensus is in the religious significance and that its meaning is that of good. Even to the satanists who use it the meaning is that of a free spirit and centering upon oneself and the desires of oneself.

On an important note please remember that satanism and nature based religion ARE NOT THE SAME!! Nor is Satanism evil except by those who make it so. It is confusion of that sort which leads to persecution and bloodshed.

What are associations of the the pentagram?

The Pentagram is a five pointed star. For early Catholics, it meant the five wounds of Jesus. For Wiccans, the upright Pentacle, pentacle inside a circle, is the religious symbol. For LaVey Satanists, an inverted pentagram with the Baphomet face is their religious symbol. Pentagram can be found in ancient Solomonic Sigils and Planetary Talismans.

Why is the pentagram symbolize devil worshipping when the original use was to symbolize the five wounds?

I'm afraid your research has not gone quite deep enough. The pentagram was (and is) used in many different places by different cultures, with various meanings. Because it is a simple geometric design of 5 overlapping straight lines forming a star, different peoples developed the symbol independently. By the 5 Wounds, I suspect you mean the 5 Wounds of Christ? While that is a perfectly good use of the symbol, the pentagram dates back much earlier than the 1st century. Just a few of its symbolic meanings include a star (including the Star of Bethlehem); the Goddess, 5 elements of air, earth, fire, water and spirit; a flower; the human form of head, arms and legs; a ram's head. It is easy to see how the inverted pentagram can represent a ram's head, with the downward point being the bearded chin and other points being ears and horns. Because from very ancient times the ram was associated with the Goddess, well-intentioned Christian missionaries taught that the ram, and specifically the nature god Pan, were images of the Devil. Unfortunately, associating the 5 pointed star with the devil does not work well with the fact that there are fifty 5 pointed stars on the American flag!

The barnishing ritual of the pentagram?

The pentagram, a five pointed star (not to be confused with the Jewish Star of David) represents the 5 elements. Yes, five. The top point represents Spirit. Going clockwise, Air, Earth, Fire & Water. The pentagram is drawn with a single interwoven line. A pentacle is a pentagram with a circle drawn around it. The meanings of this vary. To me, it symbolizes the need for balance in your life and how your actions resonate in the world. You cannot live your life without any of these elements. The pentagram has been used for thousands of years as a form of protection from evil. Yes, protection FROM. It is only until recently that the meaning has been twisted to scare people and make movie money. Even the Church, long ago used the pentagram in the Middle Ages. Pentagrams have been found by archeologists dating back to 3500 B.C.E. Early Christians saw the pentagram as the five wounds of Christ. Knights wore the pentagram in the Middle Ages to symbolize chastity, chivalry, courtesy, generosity, and piety. A police officers star is a pentagram. Knights of Columbus - pentagram. The countries Ethiopia and Morrocco use the pentagram on their flag. Many pagans choose to wear one, some don't. As in every religion it is a preference. There are those who wear huge bling pentagrams with studs and skulls just because it was on sale at Spencers, there are those who wear their protection on their hearts. Some are adorned with stones that are special to the wearer. Some have the crescent moon on either side to show the aspects of the Goddess. All are beautiful in their own way.

Are pentagrams bad if you are a Catholic?

It depends on which religion you are from. If you're Catholic, it means the 5 wounds of Jesus.Um, well No offense to the person who posted before, but you should probably check with a priest of the church or a Catholic reference book before accepting a pentagram.Roman Catholic AnswerIn the past the pentagram was commonly used to refer to the five wounds of Christ. Today it is used by witches, wicca, the occult and freemasonry. In other words, every modern use of it carries a direct connotation that would be evil if you are a Christian. Under those circumstances, I believe that, yes, if you are a Catholic, you should steer clear of anyone using a pentagram.

What is the purpose of a pentogram?

A pentagram is typically a pagan symbol, sometimes wrongly associated with devil worship, witchcraft, or evil. These generalisations steming froma more modern era are typically false. Pentagrams were used symbolically in ancient Greece and Babylonia, and are used today as a symbol of faith by many Wiccans, akin to the use of the cross by Christians and the Star of David by Jews. The pentagram has magical associations, and many people who practice Neopagan faiths wear jewelry incorporating the symbol. Christians once more commonly used the pentagram to represent the 'five wounds of Jesus' and it also has associations within Freemasonry. In Wiccan terms, the Pentagram (sometimes used synonymously with "pentacle") is used in incantations and cleansing rituals to mark the edges of a circle, which is also symbolic.

Why are the pentagram AND the inverted pentagram both evil?

Neither are evil - in fact, ancient greeks such as the Pythagoreans used it as a religious symbol and so did the early Christians (5 points to represent the 5 wounds Jesus sustained on the cross). Today, some neopagans use this symbol as a mark of faith. If it is your view that people who don't worship Christ, then you may think one or both are evil, but I believe you are mistaken. Neither symbol is evil just as a triangle isn't evil, a circle isn't evil, etc...

What does the 5 star pentagram represent?

The Pentagram has always had mystical meanings. It has been found scratched in stone age caves as old as man himself. It has been associated with astronomical and religious meaning and at certain points in history with sinister doings. Babylonian,Sumatran and Hebrew writings and drawings were often embellished with the pentagram. According to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, five was the number of Mankind. The five points of the star being elements of fire, water, air, earth and the spirit. The pentagram was a preferred emblem to adorn the jewelry and amulets of early Christians. They wore the pentagram as representing the five wounds of Christ on the cross while at the same time it symbolized doctrines of Magic, Alchemy and Kabbalah to non-Christian groups. Lately the pentagram has been most associated with Neo Pagans and Wiccans. In most Wiccan and Pagan rituals, its symbolic meaning is derived from Ceremonial Magic and protection. The five are the four elements ruled by the spirit. In many of these rituals the pentagram also symbolizes unity of the circle within the realm of the spirit and the elements. It kind of represents how life works.
