That was an era when millions of immigrants were coming to America, and there were questions about how to help them to assimilate, so they would "feel like Americans." A Christian minister named Francis Bellamy believed what was needed was a ritual that everyone could participate in, something to encourage patriotic feelings. So he wrote the Pledge. In the original version, it did NOT mention God, because although he was a minister, he wanted the pledge to be secular-- a celebration of the country's flag and its traditions, as well as praise for the country's ideal of "liberty and justice for all."

But in 1954, during the era of McCarthyism and during the Cold War, congress wanted to make a statement that Americans worship God, where our Communist enemies do not. Still, the intent is to instill patriotism and loyalty to the country, whether you were born here or not, and that is why the Pledge is still said even 125 years later.
