Why is the the movie Stand And Deliver called that?

'Stand and Deliver' was a dedicated teacher named Jaime Escalante and America's master math teacher. It is about undisciplined and poorly prepared students in Garfield High School failing math among other subjects. Escalante gave them face and the term 'Stand and Deliver' means you stand up for what you think is right, but fight for those that try to put your ideas in the shadows when you deep within you that you can help others. The educational system was failing students in all areas of math and Escalants 'stood up for the rights of the students and 'delivered' by coming to school earlier than he had to be and stayed late helping his students just so they could get passing marks in math. In a calculus exam the Educational Testing Service found the high scores of Escalant's students suspicious so they asked them to repeat the test. All but two students retook the test and had their scores reinstated. Basically Escalants was a model for the other math teachers that soon followed even though Escalants was dogged by Administration, a Janitor complaining that Escalants was in the school too early in the morning and too late at night. Still, Escalants continued on fighting all the way for his students. Escalants and fellow teachers boasted of having 1,000 students to their credit because the program was so successful, but they failed to deliver. In 1990 Esclante's math enrichment program involved over 400 students ranging from algebra to advanced calculus. In 1991 Escalante decided to leave Garfield School and the other math enriched teachers soon followed his suit. Only seven students passed (AB) test that year and four passing the BC Exam down from a high of 85. The movie 'Stand and Deliver' has, for more than a decade been a staple in high school, college classes and faculty workshops. Escalante showed he had faith in the students and he knew by 'standing' in front of them he was determined to 'deliver' the goods ... a new way to make these students feel they were intelligent and a way to make them understand math.
