They have been hunted for skin, meat and because it is thought to be a threat to fishing lines, by stealing fish already hooked.
Additional Info: After checking the US Fish and Wildlife Service List of Endangered Species, then checking the NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources, and finally checking the IUCN Red List, which lists status as "data deficient" with the population trend "unknown", and another site stated they were at Low Risk. This species is protected by the CITES listing. It is apparently difficult to gather reliable information on this species due to it's broad range, and lack of inspections for by-catch nationally. They are in the research phase concerning it's populations trends, and habitat usage studies but at present it is listed, but not as "endangered". There are several research studies on this species' life history, breeding/population and stock structure based in Hawaii currently. Also The NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources is conducting field studies on this species as well. For more details, please see sites listed below.
You are right in a way but that was in the old times history but now people have found a way to protect these beautiful animals, i have done a big big big!!! project on Orcas (also know as Killer whales) Orcas are not regarded as ab endangered species. people really need to learn were they are putting there garbage and they are polluting the air for all endangered or invasive species
The killer whale is not an endangered species. The world's largest dolphin, it is listed as "Least Concern".
Technically, the orca as a species is not endangered. They are widely distributed across the globe. However, certain communities of orca whales are endangered, such as the Southern Resident J, K and L Pods that frequent the waters of British Columbia during the summer. These three pods of orcas have the highest amounts of toxins in their bodies ever recorded; so high that their bodies should be treated as toxic waste. Also, the main prey of these orcas is salmon, and we all know what that means. Salmon in British Columbia are endangered too, so the species that eat the salmon should be also. And even a group of orcas in such critical danger were only on the Endangered Species List for a short while. We need to do everything we can to get these whales back on the ESL and start cleaning up their habitat!
Whales are endangered because people are over fishing the whales, or in other terms, whaling. Reaching lengths approaching one hundred feet and weights of one hundred tons, blue whales ((Balaenoptera musculus)) rank as the largest mammals ever to roam the earth's lands or seas. That fact alone puts them in the natural wonders category.
They belong to the Balaenopteridae family of Rorqual Whales and inhabit all of the world's oceans, except for the Arctic ocean.
Like many of the larger whale species, their population was severely depleted due to commercial whaling. The IUCN estimates current population levels for groups of blue whales according to geographic locations. Of all the groups, the IUCN ranks the Antarctic population as most endangered, saying, "the Antarctic blue whale (B. m. intermedia) subspecies should be (assessed) separately as Critically Endangered due to a reduction over the same period of over 97%".
Because its range extends across the world's oceans, different levels of protection are accorded to it, depending on geographical location.
Whale Sanctuaries for example, probably afford the most protection to whales. Member states of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) have heard a proposal for a South Atlantic Sanctuary, although they have not voted on the issue.
In October 2008, the Chilean Congress passed a law creating a whale sanctuary along the entire Chilean coast. The legislation stands to help the newly discovered Blue Whale population along with the many other cetacean species known to inhabit the waters.
The Killer whale is not endangered, some local populations are at risk, but the species is in no danger.
becase i dont knkw the answer but im in technology class doing an power point on this and im bored as ever so yea my answer is correct.....
because of habitat loss or degradation in the form of overfishing of reef fish, also because of fishing for meat and fins pose serious threats to whale sharks
because sailors eat them!
the orca whale can be endangered but i think it is not endangered
