Trick or Treating children have always been given a treat of some sort (in the late 1800's, they were given turnips of all things), but candy has grown in popularity due to it's love by children and adults alike.
So, basically, some dude was walking in a neighborhood where there was nobody with black or brown hair, so pretty much everybody was blond. Then, one day, a black cat passed his yard. The cat looked like a stray, and the dude thought that that cat was a sign of bad luck. To make himself feel better, he gave candy to all of the neighborhood children.
So, that's the story. Hope this helps! :)
It is believed that the custom of making jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween, from turnips or pumpkins, began in Ireland. In the 19th century, turnips , hollowed out to act as lantern frames and often carved with grotesque faces, were used at Halloween in parts of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. The purpose was simple, by illuminating the scary face carved into the vegetable it was believed that the souls of the dead woudl be frightened away from homes thus ensuring the safety of the occupants and the next harvest
This is in fact an American custom and does not form part of the original "celebration" which came from the Celtic countries of Wales, Scotland Ireland,Wales, Cornwall in South West England and areas of Brittany .
The American people post 1845 began to dress in rags on All Saint's Eve, also known as Hollow's eve. They would then go door to door in order to ask for food and or money.
However, in the 1950s, that changed. American picked up the traditions and soon people all over the country were going from door to door begging for treats and threatening mischief. Trick or Treat.
Okay, little kids dressed up as devils and ghosts to worship that 'spirit' and if the people didnt give candy to them, they thought the 'spirits' would haunt them.
The Romans would pass out pastries to the poor. We just evolved it to passing out candy to kids.
Candy really has nothing to do with Halloween history. It was made up for fun. To make Halloween a celebration instead of a ceremonial festival trick or treating and candy was created.
