∙ 15y agoIn 1789 France had a Revolution and the King & Queen (Louis XVI & Marie-Antionette) went to the Guillotine. After a few years Napoleon became Emperor and was subsequently replaced by King Louis XVIII, restoring the Bourbon dynasty. Throughout the 18th century France becomes Republic & Monarchy in turn and as time has passed it has established itself as a Republic, in that the head of State, the President, is elected by the people. The present incumbent is Nicolas Sarkozy.

∙ 13y agoThere generally are a king and queen of Great Britain at the same time. There currently is not a king because Queen Elizabeth II decided not to name her husband, Prince Philip, king upon her accession.

Her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh married the Queen before her coronation. When the Queen's father, George VI, died she inherited the monarchy from him as his direct descendant.
The Duke of Edinburgh could not therefore inherit the title of King.
