All body hair goes back to prehistoric humans who needed the extra hair to keep warm. Hormones released pre-puberty and during puberty control how much body hair a person grows.

Although many people today shave or wax their underarms, legs, and even pubic hair, hair removal is not done in all cultures and, in fact, cultures who never shave or wax think that shaving or waxing is unnecessary.
