As water transpires from the leaves into the atmosphere it pulls on water that had osmotically entered the roots and thus water is puled all the way up the plant; from the roots to the leaves.

Transpiration is an essential evil in the plants which takes place during gaseous exchange.

Transpiration is responsible for uptake of water from soil. It is also responsible for movement of water and dissolved minerals from the roots to different parts of plant. Plus it even results in cooling of the surfaces of leaves thereby protecting them from excessive heat.

Transpiration also helps to keep the plant cells turgid. However, when transpiration exceeds the absorption of water, it may result in wilting and later desiccation.

Two main reasons.

Transpiration takes place from the stoma/ stomata on the underside of the leaves.

  1. To cool down, evapotranspiration removes/ lowers the leaf temperature through evaporative cooling of the leaves.
  2. Transpiration also assists by providing a slight negative pressure in the leaves, this assists in drawing water up the stem (although is only one factor that contributes to this).
