Worn piston rings or valve guides. you can do a compression test to see how many cylinders effected, but if high mileage it might be time for a rebuild. Some do just the heads if that's the problem, but even so it's best to do all as the rings will not be far behind anyway.

Usually if you go to an auto care place they can do it for you which is much easier than doing it yourself where i live i got tires rotated and an oil change for thirty dollars
