Polyuria (frequent urination) can be due to several things. First, polyuria with polydipsia (frequent drinking) are common signs of Diabetes - the dog drinks a lot of water to replace the water he is losing through urination to get his blood sugar down. Second, polyuria can be due to kidney or bladder issues, from infection to cancer. Third, polyuria can be a sign of systemic disease.

I would suggest taking your dog to a veterinarian for an examination - none of the above situations are going to get better on their own, and several can get severe enough to cause death if not treated.

I would start from the suspicion that your dog is simply drinking water you aren't aware of - the toilet bowl, around house plants and from a hose outside are some of the common unusual sources. Also, is someone else now refilling the water bowl/bucket that you aren't aware of?

If your dog truly has lost his sensation of thirst and is not drinking enough water, causes range from meningitis to inner ear infection; treatment will be based upon the underlying cause, although not all of them can be treated.

It could be kidney issues or diabetes.

My dog drinks out of boredom believe it or not! Sometimes he wil lap loudly simply to get my attention. It is not uncommon for dogs to over-drink and vomit from time to time. Other times my dog will lay with his paws surrounding the bowl and drink for nothing more than the sensation.

I have had my dog checked, all was fine...he simply loves to drink water.

Perhaps your pup is bored or simply thirsty.

Let him drink and give him some attention. Word of caution: No heavy strenuous play after much water or food. (Bloat with heavy chested dogs)

PS: i learned to burp my dog

Sometimes they do that as a marking behavior similar to what wolves do. Wolves will urinate in small amounts, so they can urinate in more places to mark their territory. My guess is that your dog for some reason feels threatened by other dogs or other animals, and feels it has to declare its boundaries. You might consult with a vet or animal behaviorist if you feel it is excessive and has become problem.

Another possibility is that it has a urinary tract infection, then definitely take it to a vet.

It could be canine diabetes which can be life threatening if left untreated. The only way to know for sure is to take the dog to a vet.

The biggest cause for a dog's excessive thirst and panting is high body temperature.
