Your thumbs go numb because blood is having trouble circulating to your extremities. That's why frost bite kills your outer most parts, it's because there is not enough or no oxygen reaching the parts of your body that needs it.
This can also be a sign of Reynauds Syndrom. Not a serious condition, but it has to do with cold messing around with the nerves that control the capillaries. Once warmed up, circulation returns.
If there was no previous injury to that thumb then you most likely have a pinched nerve in your back, shoulder, or neck. Having a pinched nerve can cause this symptom and you should seek medical attention.

my leg is not numb and cold. however, if your leg is numb and cold, it could be for any number of reasons. lack of circulation could be a cause. if it continues for an extended amount of time, i would recommend seeing a doctor.
A product called 'Cold Spray' will numb the area temporarily.
