While gravity and friction will hold loose material, cohesion within rock surfaces is also important. Anything that reduces the friction (such as water), or reduces cohesion (such as a tremor) or adds potential energy (more rock, structures, people, vehicles) can cause the material to slide downhill over the underlying material.

When stress is greater than strength,the slope becomes unstable and slope failure may occur. A landslide is a kind of slope failure.

Landslides occur when a large chunk of the "toe" aka bottom of a hill is removed or let's go from the sheer weight of the soil it supports, also from deforestation where the soil has nothing to hold it in place (like hair spray for girls or gel for guys) and the weight of soil can make it go faster or slower and they can be very dangerous to people as since boulders can come crashing down with the dust and other debris
