Marco Polo was an Italian explorer. He is credited with opening Europe up to the world. As a young boy, he traveled to China with his uncle. He then stayed for years, where he studied and brought back items and souvenirs to bring back home. One of the items he brought back was noodles, which is where the Italians got the idea for pasta.

Marco Polo was not really so much famous for his journey on the silk road to mongol-controlled china and met Kublai Khan (Which some scholars say didn't happen!), but for writing a book about his journeys. The Travels of Marco Polo is in many ways a fantasy. Polo describes seeing many unreal beasts, such as Unicorns and Orang-Pendek (A Asian Ape-man), although his unicorns are probably based on Rinos.
