Try checking all the oxygen sensors and the spark plugs. My automatic 4x4, '98 would stutter and stall if I didn't keep my foot on the gas at all times. The problem? I hadn't had my regular 60k maintenence done and all my oxygen sensors and my spark plugs where clogged with junk and burned out.
ANSWER
I also have 1997 Dodge Dakota that was stalling out at start up, if I didn't keep my foot on gas pedal. I had throttle body cleaned for $200. Still had problem. Replaced IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE ($35 part) myself and problem solved. Very easy to install. In back of throttle body, two screws and unplugging electrical plug. 10 minute job.
AnswerThere may possibly be water in the gas if you live in a snowy area or whatever. Try some Iso-heet in it. AnswerI had a problem with my truck stalling soon after starting. The problem I found was the hunny comb inside the catalistic converter had detached and was suffercating the truck causing it to stall. Then a few months had pasted and the truck started doing it again. This time it was the computer. One of the pins, after warming, would not make contact and it would cause the truck to stall. Another reason my be carbon build-up. Try some fuel injector cleaner or if the truck is under 100,000 miles and fuel injected, try going to Jiffy Lube or somewhere similar and get the injectors blown. I hope this helps at lease a little. AnswerThese are all great tips, but you failed to supply some critical information..is your engine fuel injected or normally aspirated (carberated)...makes all the difference in the world. On the higher tech fuel injected systems, the computer usually shuts down the engine by virtue of the fact that information it is receiving from one or more of the sensors tells it to adjust fuel/air/ignition timing to meet the conditions its sensors report..bad sensors=bad running engine..So an added dimension on these vehicles is you have to determine if you have an actual sensor failure, a computer glitch, or a normal hardware (bad plugs, bad wires, bad fuel, vacuum leak, etc)issue. if its carberated it is relatively simplified in that it is probably either bad spark/spark plugs, bad fuel air mixture, bad ignition timing to include bad vacuum (caused by dry rotted vacuum hoses and diaphrams). Used to be a phrase...if it ain't broke, don't fix it... well they managed to "fix" the hell out of the automotive engines and now look how much better they are...NOT! Keep It Simple Silly (KISS)ANSWER

If problem goes away, it's confirmed. they have a tendency to stick. You can also take the valve out and clean it yourself if you do not want to buy a new one.
TORQUE CONVERTER IS A LIKELY CAUSE
Yes, a bad O2 sensor would cause a 2002 Dodge Dakota to stall. It would also cause bad fuel mileage and hard idling within the vehicle.
Oxygen censor
if it is automatic then this would be caused by shift down is not working in transmission
If the fuel pump is the cause of the stall out.
that specific, have the vehicle computer checked. hope it helps. duboff
It is your Idle Airflow Censor. It is located behind your air intake manifold by two screws. Take it out and clean it off and it will fix your problem.
sounds like an electrnic ignition module I have a dodge 1992 Dakota and it had that same problem, i have tried a lot of thingsthat i thought would work, but then i go a new computer from the junkyard, and it ranperfectly, hope this helps
you might have a vacuum leak in your intake manifold
Is it low on Anti-Freeze? That is a known issue for a car to stall!
Why would my 1984 Dodge pick up truck stall at the light when I stop
Your truck may have the idle to low or the compressor might have some problems
