The War of 1812 (in it's early years) was focused on the northern border and was aimed to take Canada.

The British had a fleet of "Ships of The Line" (battleships usually containing 100 or more cannons and needing up to 450 crew members)

A U.S. fleet of "Frigates" and "Sloops: (both fairly small ships compared to the ship of the line) laid siege to the fleet, breaking through the lines with the USS Niagara early in the morning.

This victory relinquished several of these ships of the line to the U.S. Navy and secured a route into Canada without Naval interruption. This also split the British supply line.
