Prokaryotic cells are much simpler than eukaryote because they are one cell organisms. They probably were here first because they didn't need as much to survive.
Procaryotes have no nuclear membrane - hence the name prokaryot as to eukaryotes that have a nucleus. Prokaryotes don't have organelles either.

all prokaryotes are aquatic in nature
The first eukaryotes are most likely to belong to the Protista kingdom. These are mostly multicellular organisms with the earlier ones including organisms like Kneallhazia solenopsae and many more.
All cells are bounded by a cell membrane (bi-lipid layer). Earlier, simpler cells - prokaryotes e.g. bacteria - do have an external strong [cellulosic?] cell wall, while more 'modern' cells, eukaryotes, utilize a glyco-protein coat for protection and strength.
Similarities among embryos.
Gregor Johann Mendel is often called as Father of modern Genetics. Before him, many scientists roughly used to study about inheritance. But Mendel strictly considered all the phenotypic and genotypic characters about the plants. For example when he was studying on pea plant(Pisum sativum),he considered all the external characters such as shape,colour..etc.Hence he was more particular than earlier scientists.
Through evolutionary theory. According to evolutionary theory all modern lifeforms evolved from earlier, ancestral forms, ancestry they share with other forms. In the case of humans, such ancestors would have included earlier, now extinct species of ape and yet earlier primates.
[1] There's no all-across-the-board agreement. Some scientists believe the first organisms to be amoebae and fungi, others bacteria. The former are called eukaryotes, because they have nuclei. The latter are called prokaryotes, because they have no nuclei. Those who believe the eukaryotes were first call chloroplasts and mitochondria among the first organisms. Those who believe the prokaryotes were first call the monera among the first organisms. [2] A common assumption has been equating earlier appearance with simplicity. It favors the prokaryotes, for their lack of the more complex nuclei. [3] But a growing argument has been equating earlier appearance with complexity, later appearance with streamlining into simplicity. It favors the eukaryotes, for their nuclei which the projaryotes supposedly jettisoned in their efforts to streamline. [4] Another assumption has been linking earlier appearance with areas of heat, deep within the oceans. It favors the prokaryotes, which handled high temperatures much better than the eurkaryotes. [5] The oldest known fossils date back 3.5 billion years. They're the stromatolites of Glacier National Park. And they contain cyanobacteria microbes. [6] Some scientists say that there's an even older first organism that was the ancestor common to both eurkaryotes and prokaryotes. But they disagree on whether that ancestor evolved first into the former and then the latter, or vice versa.
The dinosaur is thought to be the ancestor of all things today.

The earlier scientists did not care about the gravitation. They took the phenomena happening around them as granted. They did not think logically about gravitation while newton observed it carefully and minutely

Since glass was invented, the scientists were able to create the microscope. If this was never invented, the scientists would never have been able to discover cells.

"Pre-" I believe :)
A volcanic steam explosion was earlier believed to be the cause.
