Salt is an ionic substance, meaning it breaks up into ions when dissolved.

Salt water has Na+ (sodium) and Cl- (chlorine) ions present in it, therefore being able to carry a charge through the ions.

to prove this you could try running an electric current through water, it won't work.

but if you dissolve some salt in it and attach a globe to the circiut, the globe will light up :)
