It is the best way to prevent the flu and from giving it to others if you catch it because you aren't vaccinated. Each year the vaccine protects against three different flu viruses (in the 2013-2014 flu season some new formulations for the flu vaccination now protect against four types of the flu, two Type A and two Type B.) if you don't get the shot each year, you may not have any immunity to the type of flu that is expected to be circulating in the flu season. The flu vaccines are proven safe and effective over decades of use.

Scientists have announced in late 2013 that they are making quick progress on a "universal flu vaccine" which will be able to fend off any type of flu. They predict it will be available for use within the next five years. This might make yearly flu vaccination a thing of the past (although boosters may be required at some intervals but all that is still under research and development.

See the related question below about who should not have a flu shot and if you don't have one of those reasons to not be vaccinated, then you should get the annual vaccination.

If you are allergic to eggs, you should talk to your allergist to find out if you can get vaccinated for the flu. In the past an allergy to chicken eggs was a contradiction for receiving a flu vaccination, because the virus culture used to make the vaccine is grown in chicken eggs to produce enough to make the vaccines. Recent studies indicate that those with egg Allergies might still be able to be vaccinated if the proper protocol is followed for the administration and observation afterward.

Do flu shots contain live bacteria?

No, there is no live bacteria in flu shots. Flu shots are to prevent the flu which is caused by a virus, not bacteria. The various flu vaccines contain pieces of viruses that are treated to be able to give you immunization, but not make you sick from the virus contained in the vaccination. The flu shots contain inert ("dead") viruses or pieces of viruses instead of whole particles. The flu mist used in the nasal vaccination is made with active ("live") but weakened viruses that can not make you sick if you have an otherwise healthy body and immune system.

Do flu shots really work on all flu bugs?

No, they only will work on the exact type(s) of flu that the vaccine is made to prevent. In the US, the seasonal flu vaccine contains the antigen for three different types of flu each year that are chosen as the mostly likely to be spreading during that season. If there are very similar strains circulating, the vaccine can sometimes provide some carry over protection to the similar ones, but you can only count on protection from the exact types included in the vaccines.
