Because if it wasn't the mother would die of stress pains when the baby is Born but it is because calcium hasn't contributed to the development of the baby and it's skull hasn't properly been conjoined yet

The bones of a newborn baby should be firm, except for certain parts of the skull called the fontanels. These areas should be soft because the skull needs to keep expanding to allow the brain room to grow. After a few months, the skull will be the proper size and the fontanels will close over and become hardened.
