I don't have a documented answer. My educated guess is that people, when wounded, want the wound to go away. So they'll pick scabs, rub bruises -- and lick their own blood. Anything to make evidence of the wound disappear. I believe giving the illusion (even if the patient doesn't believe it) of wellness is very therapeutic.
