The legacy of the British Empire (it covered a large part of the globe) is that many people have English as a second language. Also the and the power house and influence of the US economy means that much of the world trade is conducted in (US) English.
These two factors meant that English became the most desirable second language for most people to learn....this has gradually resulted in English becoming the most effective language for international communications.
This is good, people need to be able to communicate one with another, no matter where they come from, however it is also important that other languages (no matter how few people use them) continue to be valued and used or the cultural heritage of the planet will be poorer.
Thus English is important to a person because it enables him/her to communicate on a global basis.
