Best Answer

According to legend, the ravens are linked to the story of the fourth-century martyred Spanish priest St. Vincent whose body was brought ashore near Cape St Vincent on the southern coast of Portugal. A shrine was erected over his grave which was always guarded by ravens. King Afonso had the body of the saint exhumed in 1173 and brought by ship to Lisbon, still accompanied by the ravens. It was buried on the site of the Church, Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora near the Alfama
