as we move down the group solubility of sulphates decrease,for alkaline earth metals because down the group, size of cation increase, thus hydration energy decreases,and thus solubility of sulphates decrease.

Heat of Hydration means the energy released when a substance makes new chemical bonds with water (or parts of water molecules).

In the reaction,

M + 2H2O --> M(OH)2 + H2,

the water molecule is split at the surface of the metal:

H2O --> H+ + OH-

This is because the outer 2 electrons of each metal atom, being held only loosely, travel easily to the surface and are attracted by the hydrogen ends of the polarised water molecules.

(Please ignore the spacer dots in the following diagram! e- means electron in the metal. The d+ and d- show the polarisation of the water molecule.)

.............. d+ H

e- ===> ...... \

...................... O 2d-

..................... /

.............. d+ H

This initial step happens more readily as you go down the group, since outer electrons are held much more weakly.

But then, as the somewhat positively charged hydrogen atom releases its electron completely onto the oxygen causing the formation of hydroxide ions, the latter are attracted lessby the nuclei of lower Group 2 metals than by those of higher ones, because of electron shielding and a greater distance to the nucleus.

The net result is that when M(OH)2 is formed, the bonds between the metal ion and the hydroxide ion are longer (towards the bottom of the group), so that less energy had been released in forming them, i.e. the heat of hydration is less.

What trends in the solubilities of the compounds of the alkaline earth metals can be inferred?

1) NaOH : two top alkaline earth metals' solubility is decreasing as we can see from cloudy to lots of solid and two bottom metals' solubility is also decreasing in observing difference amount of solid between Sr(NO3)2 and Ba(NO3)2 2) NaCl: all of the alkaline earth metals are soluble. 3) NABr: all of the alkaline earth metals are soluble. 4) NaI: all of the alkaline earth metals are soluble. 5) Na2SO4: solubility of alkaline earth metals is decreasing from clear to solid and cloudy. 6) Na2CO3: solubility of alkaline earth metals from Mg(No3)2 to Sr(NO3)2 is decreasing and after Sr(NO3)2, solubility is increasing. 7) Na2C2O4: solubility of alkaline earth metals is decreasing from clear to solid and cloudy.

Which property of alkaline earth metal increases with increase in their atomic numbers?

reactivity

Which alkaline earth metal is the most likely to attract an electron pair?

The electronegativityÊ of alkaline earth metals decreases as you go down the group due to increase in atomic radius. The earth alkaline metals are beryllium, magnesium, strontium, barium and radium. Radium has the smallest electronegative.

Why are neither theh alkali metals nor the alkaline-earth metals found uncombined in nature?

Due to their very high reactivity with oxygen and also water, they combine to form oxides, hydroxides and from there to carbonates and others.

What is the first element of the alkaline earth metals?

Beryllium is the first element in the alkaline earth metals.

What happens to concentration of the hydronium ions as the pH decreases?

As the PH value decreases the acidity increases .When the PH value is 7 it is neutral. More than 7 it shifts to alkaline(basic) nature. Less than seven it will be acidic.

Is blood alkaline?

you are born with a high alkaline level in your blood, but it slowly decreases in life.

What happens to the pH of distilled water when you add NaOH?

HCl : makes it acidic. it decreases the pH NaOH : makes it alkaline. it increases the pH

Why akali metals is active base than alkaline metals from their solubility's in water?

the solubility of alkali metal bases is more than the solubility of alkaline metal bases. thus the reaction: base=metal ion + OH- occus faster. since the more the OH ions the stronger the base, alkali metal bases are stronger than alkaline metal bases

What is the solubility of a metal?

Metals are not soluble in water; the chemical reaction with water is not solubility. Metals are soluble in acids; this solubility depends on the specific metal and acid, temperature, pressure, stirring, form of the metal, etc.

Does pH increase as the concentration increases?

As H goes up (becomes more acidic), the pH level goes down. Acids have a pH below 7 whereas bases - substances that readily bond with H+ ions a.k.a. alkaline substances, have a pH greater than 7
