Why does people cut down trees?

Because the humans are the virus of our planet. They think only about themselves and their money. These are things capitalism did to our world... Also, they have a need for timber and other materials that forests can grant.

If they find oil or minerals, they will make an easy location to take them out. Loggers usually cut the trees down for lumber, and to make way for new communities.

There are many reasons that humans cut down rainforest trees, including:

1.) Gold mining. People dig up the rainforest soil and build roads to look for gold, which means having to clear the trees away first.

2.) Logging. People cut down the trees to turn into things like paper, plastic and cardboard that we take for granted in our everyday life.

3.) Cattle ranching. Thousands of animal species are to be replaced by one : cattle. Cattle ranching is a popular job amongst settlers in the rainforest, and they cut down trees to let their cattle graze on the grass below the canopy. When the grass dries out, they move on to another part of the rainforest and cut down more trees there for the same reason.

HOW WE CAN HELP

* Adopt-A-Rainforest - It may sound strange, but believe me, it's effective! Adopt a rainforest at Adoptarainforest.comand you will be helping millions of plants, animals and trees stay alive.

* Start a campaign or a petition - Ask your teacher or parent if you can start a petition in school or in the town centre to raise awareness about the rainforest. You could have banners saying "Save the Forest" or you could make up a dance showing how the rainforest can affect us and the planet. For example, you can explain how if a tree is cut down, the sloth and the caterpillar would die out because there would be no trees for them to feed on. That means that the Harpy Eagle would die out, as there would be no sloths to eat. The Jaguar would die out as all the Harpy Eagles would be gone. Somewhere along the line, we humans will die out, too, if this keeps happening, because we rely on animal meat to give us a healthy, balanced diet. If Man does die out, it will be our fault. Man is the one chopping down the trees, Man is the one killing the forest people and the animals, Man is the one bringing this fate upon us.

A species becomes extinct every 30 minutes. So in a day, that's 12 species extinct! If we keep going at this rate, then over a million species will be extinct by the turn of the century.
