A lens is not absolutely necessary in order to have a camera. There are devices known as pinhole cameras that are able to expose photographic film without the use of a lens. In that case, the tiny hole takes the place of the lens. However, they are impractical to use because they require very long exposures and aren't very adaptable, so they are mostly curiosities today.

The lens focuses the light on the film (or sensor). If you look at a wall opposite a window, the light that strikes it is not focused. You do not see a picture on the wall. If, however, you take a magnifying glass and hold it a few inches from the wall, you will see an upside-down image of the window and whatever is outside, projected on the wall. You have focused the light, just as a camera lens does. Essentially, no lens, no picture.

That is one reason for lenses. The other purposes are generally magnification and wide angle views, depending on how the lenses are designed. That's a subject for a textbook. You can find out more about lenses by checking out the links in the "Related Links" section below the ads.
