There's multiple reasons you may want to use an SD card in a notebook. Probably the most common thing people would do would be to use it to transfer files to/from the notebook.
Someone may have taken pictures that are on the SD card, and so could transfer them to the notebook by popping in the SD card. Or if you wanted to give some files to a friend, and they have an SD card, you could pop it in and transfer the files onto it.
Basically you can use it like you would have used a floppy in the past, or even a CD/DVD drive - essentially to transfer files to wherever/whoever/whenever you want... since you can get at least a 32GB (haven't looked for a while, wouldn't be surprised if it's 64GB or higher now or soon...) card, which is much larger than a DVD could hold.
I suppose in theory, you may also use it for Vista's Readyboost (I think that's right) - where it uses a USB/Flash drive/etc as memory to help speed up the system - assuming your SD card is sufficiently fast. It won't use just any flash card/drive, and tests it for speed requirements before letting you use it.
Size - is the main difference. A 'standard memory card is approximately 25mm square. A micro SD card is about a third of the size. There are adaptors available so you can use a micro SD card in a standard SD card slot.
It doesn't matter what kind of SD card you use, but SanDisk SD cards are a very good and reliable brand name for SD cards.
