CBS had planned to do a 9th and 10th season- but Chuck Norris announced he was ready to leave the show and move on to other things. He asked the studio to produce those two seasons as a spin-off called "The Texas Rangers"- but they decided to discontinue the series since they were going to lose their lead actor. So the 8th season ended with a series finale as a 2-hour special.

He even asked the producers to have the following seasons continue without him as a spin-off titled "The Texas Rangers". They told him he was the reason for the show and discontinued it since he did not want to do it anymore.
