1968 was a year of riots, rebellion, assassinations, and political and economic change. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. King was killed in Memphis where he was trying to help negotiate a strike between sanitation employees and management. RFK was killed right after he had won the California primary and appeared to be on his way to becoming President. The Republicans nominated Richard M Nixon and the Democrats nominated Hubert Humphrey. Nixon defeated Humphrey in one of the closest elections in history. 1968 also saw the height of the protest against the war in Vietnam. Young students conducted protests against the war and there were violent demonstrations on many campuses. The Civil Rights Movement mourned the loss of MLK but many Black neighborhoods erupted in riots and violence. The Democratic Convention in Chicago saw violent clashes between war protesters and the police. Women also began to protest for their equal rights with men. On the plus side, the US launched three men who circled the moon for the most spectacular achievement of the space program to date. It would turn out that 1968 would be a turning point in American political history.

There were several ways 1968 was a pivotal year. The Vietnam War was at its height and so were protest against it. They were tearing the country apart. The 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago also had a lot of protesters who did not want the Convention to select a pro-war candidate. The Chicago police brutalized them which only fanned the flames of dissent across the country.

Also, two of America's greatest figures, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, were assassinated that year, setting off riots in many major cities.

It put Nixon in power. All he did was bring shame to the government through the Watergate scandal and ended up being impeached. This heightened the people's distrust toward the US government.
