The land purchase was significant several reasons. In the short term: the seemingly worthless land cost the U.S. approximately $0.01 per acre. It contained later discovered significant mineral deposits. The most well known being gold, provoking a California-esk rush of exploration. More recently, the oil deposits and territorial location has been significant in America's world position. A notable portion of America's not insignificant oil reserves are found in the Alaskan territory. Its location offers a very relevant military platform both as a buffer to the former Soviet Union and communication/observation outpost due to its nearness to the Pole. It's location and coast line also provides bountiful, varied, and lucrative fishing grounds that can be responsibly governed due to being within territorial waters.
It got Russian claims to the Oregon Territory voided and Alaska later proved to be mineral rich and the perfect location for sports hunters and fisherman. It has a thriving seafood industry and is the home to almost 700,000 Americans.
