Why was Germany divided into four occupation zones after World War 2? |
Another view:
Germany was divided into 4 occupational zones by the victorious Allied Powers which were The United States, The USSR, The British, and The French at the Potsdam Conference held in Berlin from July 17, until August 2 in 1945. The purpose of this division was to implement the decisions made at the conference in Yalta on Feb 4 - 11 1945. These decisions were to divide Germany into 4 occupational zones under a unified control commission. Each country would control a part of Germany until its sovereignty was restored. They wanted to make sure that the Nazi party would not regain control and reestablish their military. It was also part of the reparations to the countries that Germany had destroyed.
