Hitler had to build up the representation of the Nazis in the Reichstag. In the Elections of March 1933, Hitler received more seats in the Reichstag, and with allied Center and Nationalist Parties, he get control of more than 50% of the Reichstag. He passes the Enabling Act, which allows him to make laws without consulting the government. This made Hitler a dictator. The Night of the Long Knives (1934), Hitler has 400 of his rivals killed, including Ernst Rohm, who was the head of the SA (a.k.a. the Brownshirts). After the death of the German president Hindenburg, Hitler declares himself the Fuhrer, or the supreme ruler combining the powers of the President and the Chancellor. He has the entire army swear personal loyalty to him.

Hitler became Chancellor in 1933 because he used the Nazi's strengths to persuade people to accept his views. Hitler had excellent speaking skills which he used to inspire people and to trick the public into getting what he wanted. His speaking manipulated the minds of others, people heard him and instantly there was a feeling of relief. People wanted to vote for Hitler.

Hitlers Propaganda and campaigns led people to accept the Nazi parties views. They used posters and radio's to communicate to the public and Hitler personally flew around Germany on a private plane to give speeches across the country to his supporters. Hitler treated his opponents violently and used his private army (paramilitary) to attack his opponents on the streets. He scared people so that they would not vote against him. People did not want to oppose him.

Hitler critised the Weimar government and pointed out all of it's faults and the targets they promised to reach but could not. He also critised the system the weimar government was run by. At the time the Nazi's had strong, sensible policies which appealed to peasants, farmers and small businessmen, which at the time made up a large majority of the general public.

Towards the more heated areas of the elections the Nazi party needed funding and support from the big businesses. His opponents had many weaknesses which worked in his favour. The current government failed to deal with the depression which was an important and well debated issue with the German public. The other parties and the government would not co-operate with each other and as a result this helped the Nazi party as no two parties would merge and oppose them as a larger force.

The Germans did not trust the new democratic parties as the democratic parties were a new idea for Germans and it did not appeal to most traditional, old-fashioned citizens.

Finally Von Papen and President Hindeburg made a deal to elect Hitler into the power of Chancellor thinking that they could control him, monitor him and instruct him but they were wrong. Hitler slowly got rid of the opposing parties and stripped ministers of their titles and appointed new ones.

These actions resulted in Hitler becoming Chancellor of Germany in 1930 and eventually the leader of Germany altogether.

He gained the support of other right-wing groups (notably the conservative German National People's Party) following the inconclusive November 1932 election (in which the Nazis had actually lost two million votes) and gathered enough votes to control the Reichstag despite heading a minority party. His government was initially a coalition, but other parties were dissolved by July. Even after the ban on Germany's powerful opposition Communist Party under the spurious pretext of the February 27 Reichstag fire, the Nazis failed to win a majority in the March 5 election.

The economy in Germany was horrible when the Stock Market crashed in the USA in 1929. The USA banks wanted their loaned money back from Germany which worsened the economic crisis in German banks, which left 6 million Germans unemployed by 1933.

Hitler's message that Germany mustn't take money from the USA was crafted carefully into simple but effective slogans to make people believe the Hitler was the only one that could save Germany. Hitler was also a very influential speaker who delivered powerful speeches, which appealed to Germans in the countryside and the city. The number of SA (a force to protect Nazi speakers at meetings) expanded and imposed violence on KPD (Communist Party Meetings.)

Due to these factors and confidential political deals the Nazi's won 230 seats in the 1932 elections and Hitler was able to become chancellor by 1933.

How did Adolf Hitler get elected president?

Chancellor was the top man in German Politics ( still is, they also have a president but he is a lower-level official, no US equivalent. Sorry to relate , Adolf Hitler was legitimately elected by the voting populace of Germany to the post of Chancellor- which once in, he expanded to Fuhrer ( Leader) and ReichsKanzler- Imperial or Realm chancellor- de facto- Dictator. Adolf was elected by the people- He did not March into Berlin with a Tank convoy! This is one of the tragic failures of ( People"s Government). In a different vein the Italian Empire was ditched- not by Mussolini ( he was already dead) the Communists, or the Neo-Nazis- but by our old friend (?) the Ballot Box- in l946.

Why was Hitler appointed chancellor of Germany on January 30 1933 and were some of his first acts as chancellor?

It's a long and somewhat complicated question. So here goes...To start, we need a little background info. Germany's government works kind of like the British government (and not at all like the US government). The President is the head of state- he gets elected, and has a lot of power like the Kaiser used to have, but generally does not use it, nor does he run the government. There is also a legislature; the lower house, which does most of the work, is called the Reichstag. The political party that has the most members ("seats") in the Reichstag gets to choose who is the Chancellor and the Cabinet. If no party has more than 50% of the seats, they can form a coalition with other parties, and then share the cabinet positions. If that doesn't work, the President can simply appoint someone to be the Chancellor. In January 1933, there was no majority party. Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party had the most seats- a little over 30%. The previous Chancellor was unable to get the Reichstag to pass laws, so he had to resort to constantly asking the President to use emergency decrees to get anything done. Some powerful politicians and businessmen asked the President to appoint Hitler to be Chancellor. They said that they believed he would be an independent who could make deals and get things done without having to use the President's decrees anymore. In reality, they thought Hitler was an idiot who they could manipulate. Hitler had also made promises to help the businessmen once he was in power, so they supported him. The President didn't like Hitler, but reluctantly appointed him anyway.Once in power, Hitler wasn't able to immediately do much. He announced that there would be a new election for the Reichstag at the beginning of March 1933. The plan was to try to win more seats, and maybe get a majority of seats. However, fate would offer him a surprise opportunity.About a week before the election, the Reichstag building was set on fire. A Communist was arrested at the scene; he admitted to setting the fire, and was sentenced to death. However, Hitler used the arson as evidence of an impending Communist revolt. The President passed an emergency decree, the "Reichstag Fire Decree", which suspended most civil liberties and gave Hitler broad powers to suppress the "revolt".Hitler abused these powers, as well as his Nazi Party's stormtroopers, to influence the election by intimidating voters. The Nazi Party won over 40% of the seats, and allied with a couple other right-wing parties so that combined, they had 60%, enough to pass any law, even an amendment to the constitution. At the end of March 1933, Hitler's coalition passed a constitutional amendment called the "Enabling Act" which basically gave most of the government's power directly to Hitler- he was able to make laws and ignore the constitution as he saw fit.And at this point, Hitler was the dictator of Germany. Over the next seventeen months or so, Hitler consolidated power, eliminated political opponents, and re-formed the government to suit his ideology. The last obstacle to his power was removed when the President died in August 1934; Hitler chose not to replace him, meaning he was officially the undisputed master of Germany until his death in April 1945.

What movement did Hitler use to rise to power?

Hitler had three main steps to power. The first was his moves to become head of the Nationalist Socialist (NAZI) Party of Germany following his return from WWI. Once he had actually found the party with which he so identified, he was able to become the head of it within a year. The second move was to take over the existing German government, called the Wiemar Republic after what was then the capital city. He did this through a series of tricky moves. First, he managed to get his party a majority in the version of US Congress that the Germans had at that point. Once his party had that position, he was supposed to become the emperor's chancellor, but he refused that position, causing a crisis. When the emperor asked him again to become the chancellor, Hitler said that he would only take the job if the emperor stepped down. Seeing the righting on the wall, the emperor stepped down from his position in 1933, the same year that US President FDR was inaugurated, although it was a decade before they clashed. The third and last move that Hitler did to get his power was to build the military. This was illegal according to the Versailles Treaty, which had ended WWI. However, because everyone remembered the horror of that war, no one condemned Hitler for it, for fear of sparking another. It was during this time that Hitler and his puppet Mussolini of Italy began their revolution in Spain. Although they had little political interest there, they were able to use that war to hone their battle tactics. After this war, Hitler felt ready to begin his conquest of the world for his German Reich, which he claimed would last a thousand years. It lasted only twelve.

What Political parties did Hitler ban?

At the end of March 1933, Hitler's coalition government was able to pass an amendment to the constitution which is commonly called the "Enabling Act". The Enabling Act took most of the government's power and basically gave it directly to Hitler himself. So Hitler could make up laws as he wanted, and had full control of all military and police forces, in addition to the Nazi Party's own paramilitary forces. In less than three months, he had successfully outlawed other political parties or had used the threat of arrest or violence to intimidate allied political parties into disbanding and joining his Nazi Party.

In 1933 Hitler was elected as Reich's Chancellor because he promised that he would fight the Versailles Treaty which had crippled Germany economically and that he would prevent the communists from gaining a majority of seats in parliament. When was Hitler elected?

He was never elected either Chancellor or President of Germany, but he did win a majority of seats in several elections, including the most important one in 1933. He was appointed Chancellor in January 1933 from Paul von Hindenburg, the president, who was under great pressure, and who actually despised him. As the undisputed leader of his party he was then able to first pass the enabling act which made him effectively dictator, then ban all other parties, then after Hindenburg's death merge the offices of President and Chancellor into one office, "Führer und Reichskanzler".

What nation did the Nazi Party win control over in 1933?

Adolf Hitler's NSDAP the National Zocialiste Deustsche Arbeiter Partei (National German Workers Party) aka the "NAZI" party was a small, often ridiculed political party that started in the early 1920's in Munich, during the bitter poverty and humiliation of Germany after it's defeat in WWI. Hitler built it up into a huge success, with a large following, and by 1933, was able to narrowly win the election, followed by appointment of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany. After his election, he set about removing the checks and balances that had been in place, ended up controlling the military and everything else, and the rest is history.
