Johnson was a very powerful Senate leader and knew a lot of info about everyone in the Senate and was not afraid to use it. He also was from Texas which had many electoral votes. Kennedy disliked Johnson, but he needed him to win. Kennedy had the eastern coast pretty much in place for the election but need the help of Johnson to get the western states.

LBJ was a powerful senator and knew where all the bodies were buried in Washington. He was from Texas which was a high electoral state so all the votes would go to JFK. The combination of the two put him on the ticket.
