Answer
There is NO verse in the Quran that says u cant have more than 4 wives. Until u give which verse was it to prove yr claim, only then this discussion can be continued. so get yr facts straight, and i am more than happy to answer the question for u.
In addition, The rule in Islam is that, u can only marry more than one wife IF u comply the conditions stated in Islam. Will elaborate more on this later.
Correct answer
Quran sura 4: An Nisa(The Women), Ayat 3 says
"If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands pos sess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice."
This verse clearly says a muslim male can keep Max 4 women in his marriage contact at the same time. of course, if he divorces his wives or they die then he can marry again provided that he can not keep more that 4 women in his marriage contract at the same time.
Now to the original question: In Arabia at the time of Prophet Mohammad(sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), it was the custom to keep as many wives one desires without any limits. But This verse capped the max limitation to 4. Now when this verse was revealed, prophet already had more that 4 wives(though he had more marriages for the sole purpose of spreading Islaam and only after the death of his beloved first wife, Hazrat Kadija). As prophet could not unjustly divorce any of his existing wives hence after this verse was revealed prophet did'nt marry further but kept his existing wives.
