NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) was formed on the 4th of April 1949 to form an alliance to stand against the soviet union. The Soviet Union were strong in numbers therefore an alliance was formed, if any country outside of NATO was to attack any of the countries within NATO, all of the countries within NATO would go to war to stop the threat.

okay well this is all i know;

basically it was because Truman wanted to get as many countries as possible to join it, aswell as Germany; because once in the NATO, you cant have war with each other. i mean, you're allies.they even invited Stalin (but he rejected them, due to the American hatred there) , which was a clever act from Truman to avoid the cold war. However, the NATO was also set up to strengthen its powers. because if you faced America on its own, yes it was powerful, but not as powerful enough. so getting all these countries to join with make them super strong, leading to other countries to be scared of them and not start war. basically it was an act to prevent another world war.

however, when Stalin sets up the Warsaw Pact with the countries it has overtaken, trumans idea of non-war peaceful world was kinda destroyed. because it was now like NATO vs Warsaw Pact. two of the stronegst alliences ever.

i don't know more cos we're just stduyign it.

but i hope it helpsss.

xx.

How does NATO stack up against Russia militarily?

Since the USA is a member of NATO, NATO is far superior. NATO _without_ American support would be a pushover to the Russians. A big part of that is that NATO is overreliant on American power. If they had to defend themselves with only their own resources, then most of the NATO nations would be forced to severely curtail their social welfare state and invest more heavily in defense.
