The goal of Nixon's visit was to open trading with China again. He was the first president to visit Communist China. It marked the reopening of U.S. relations with China. No president had visited there since the Communist government took power.
He wanted to improve US-Chinese relations. Remember, this was during the Cold War, so the two countries weren't getting along very well- China was communist and the US a democracy.
