He was not known by this name, but it is what his son telegraphed to the rest of the family upon his death, "The old lion is dead." More than anything it pays tribute to his character and his place as the patriarch.

There is no indication he was every called "The Old Lion", but, there was reference to "The Lion in the White House" (a book by this title was written) and when he passed on the newspapers printed "The Old Lion Is Dead." His nickname was Teddy (some teddy bears were made to sell ... nothing to do with Rosevelt). Some called him a bully because of his strong character and they thought he rushed into other countrie's situations before thinking. He was with the Rough Riders, and he also helped build the Panama Canal, etc. He also had high morals and treated all equally and tried to remain true to the people. He was on Safari in Africa and killed 150 animals while there, shipping them back to the U.S., to be stuffed and displayed in a museum for society to see. This could be where the term "Lion" came in, but there is absolutely no mention that he was called "The Old Lion" (at least to his face. He was often quoted as saying "Speak softly, but carry a big stick." I have a feeling this is homework so I would suggest because President Rosevelt had such a strong character as not only as a human being, but as President, that you go onto: www.Google.com Type in: The Biography of President Rosevelt President Rosevelt was an interesting and complicated man with high moral standings and one interesting character and it's a must read on his Biography because his life was one long and interesting adventure.
